The ENAMEH is a statistical instrument conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) to collect data on own-account workers who manage micro or small-scale economic units.

Household micro-enterprises are defined as family-based production units operating across all economic sectors. These entities typically lack a separate legal personality (corporate ID) and do not maintain formal accounting records. The scope of the survey also includes businesses where the owner does not receive a fixed nominal wage or where there is a commingling of household and business expenditures and income.

By utilizing these datasets, public and private stakeholders can access critical information regarding small and micro-businesses to quantify their contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This study provides the empirical basis for the formulation of evidence-based public policies and incentives aimed at supporting this demographic.

The survey serves as a primary source for informal sector statistics. It was previously conducted between 2013 and 2015 as the National Survey of Productive Households (ENHOPRO); since 2017, it has been administered annually as the National Survey of Household Micro-Enterprises (ENAMEH).
